Recorded Winter, 2010 at The Brewhouse in Minneapolis

This Time

Estaire Godinez is a truly unique and amazing artist. Her ability to play so many percussion instruments in any number of different musical styles and do so alongside some of the greatest musicians on the planet is no less remarkable than her ability to gracefully weave her lyrics between Spanish, Portuguese, and English and do this in such an intimate and beautiful way. As a person, she is so open and giving. What you see is truly what you get.

Oh, and by the way, this band is kick-ass…

Peter Schimke on piano, Irv Williams on tenor sax.

Irv Williams & Peter Schimke

Making this record was really an amazing experience for me. Almost every cut was a first take… and I was quite pleased with the way it all turned out in the end. Working with Irv in this context allowed for the kind of intimate musical dialogue that I had been wanting to experience since the very first time I ever heard this avatar. I am, of course a fan of many great records made throughout the years in the duo context… particularly work by Steve Lacy and Mal Waldron, and the fairly recent recording by Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, 1+1. -Peter Schimke

Mark Murphy sings Cole Porter. Musical direction by Peter Schimke

The Latin Porter

“This is a project that has been on Mark Murphy’s mind for years, not just because of his longstanding love for the songs of Cole Porter, but because, as he notes in his perceptive dialog, many great Latin composers, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, have been influenced by the sophisticated, devil-may-care compositions of Mr. Porter. So the connection of the two, Latin rhythms and Porter’s compositions, is a natural…”

“… the contributions of pianist Peter Schimke can not be overstated, not only through his wonderful solos and musical conception, but through the band that he assembled from his own deep connections to the Latin music community. In many ways, this project couldn’t have happened without him.” – Ben Sidran
